Enjoy a rejuvenating soak at this quality boutique retreat.
One of our traditions as a couple is to gift experiences for Birthdays, rather than things. If you’re looking for a memorable experience to share as a couple when visiting Queenstown, the Onsen Hot Pools are worth adding onto your “must do” list. The unique concept is a take on the Japanese bathing tradition, with a kiwi twist.
The complex is snuggled along the cliffside in the quintessential southern landscape. Each exclusive use hot tub offers panoramic views of the mountains across the valley that envelops the Shotover River. The retreat uses fresh water from the surrounding mountains to fill and refresh the pools.
We arrived at the large airy reception for check in and automatically felt relaxed. The surroundings, incredible views, soft sounds of calming music and sweet smells of fragrance are all designed to transport you to tranquillity.
We chose to book the original cedar lined hot tub experience. When your pool is ready, you are escorted to your private pool room which is equipped with a shower and breathtaking alpine views. The space offers a retractable roof giving you the opportunity to switch from an indoor to an outdoor experience at the push of a button. The day we visited was during a southern winter and the rain was very nearly becoming snow, so we had the roof partially closed. The hot tub was a toasty 40+ degrees. The price includes the hour soak, towels, and a complimentary snack and drink. We opted for a glass of Pinot Noir each, and some crisps which we kept aside to enjoy on our drive back to Wanaka.
The retreat is setup for all seasons and there are several options available, including sessions by lantern light (sunset). They have a complimentary shuttle from Queenstown which is a great option as parking onsite and on the roadside is limited. Onsen also have a Day Spa if you are looking to add a treatment onto your experience. They can create a bespoke spa experience so check out their website to find out more and to secure your spot. Remember to book well in advance to avoid disappointment!
